The Hardest Part Is Usually Walking Through the Door

Starting something new can be intimidating.

Whether you've been thinking about trying Jiu Jitsu for weeks or you've been curious for years, there's a good chance you've imagined all kinds of scenarios before ever stepping onto the mats. Maybe you're worried about being out of shape. Maybe you think everyone else will know more than you. Maybe you're wondering if you'll fit in.

The reality is much simpler.

Every experienced student remembers what it felt like to be brand new. Nobody starts with perfect technique, endless cardio, or complete confidence. Everyone begins the same way—by showing up for the first time.

One of the biggest surprises for new students is how welcoming the environment can be. While training can be challenging, there is also a strong sense of teamwork. People want to see each other improve. Questions are encouraged. Mistakes are expected.

For adults, the first class is often less about learning dozens of techniques and more about getting comfortable with the process. You'll learn a few movements, practice with partners, and begin to understand how Jiu Jitsu works. There is no expectation that you'll have everything figured out right away.

For parents watching their children start, the experience can be just as rewarding. Kids quickly discover that progress comes from effort, patience, and consistency. They learn how to listen, work with others, and overcome small challenges one step at a time.

Over the years, we've seen people walk through the doors for many different reasons. Some were looking for a new hobby. Some wanted a challenge. Some wanted more confidence. Others simply wanted to try something different.

What they often find is much more than they expected.

The friendships, the personal growth, the small victories, and the confidence that develops over time are often what keep people coming back.

If you've been thinking about getting started, remember that nobody expects perfection. The hardest part is usually taking that first step.

Everything else is learned along the way.
