One of the most common questions we hear is how long it takes to move up to the next belt in Jiu Jitsu. The honest answer is that there isn’t a fixed timeline—it really depends on the individual.

Progress in Jiu Jitsu comes from consistency, effort, and time on the mats. Some students train multiple times per week, focus on learning during class, and gradually build the skills needed for advancement. Others may train less frequently or take more time to develop comfort with techniques and live rolling.

At most academies, including ours, belt promotions are based on overall development rather than a set number of classes or months. Coaches look at things like understanding of technique, ability to apply what you’ve learned during live training, consistency in attendance, and overall growth as a student.

It’s also important to remember that Jiu Jitsu is a long-term journey. Each belt represents years of learning, not just techniques but also timing, problem-solving, and confidence under pressure.

Instead of focusing on how fast you can get your next belt, the best approach is to focus on showing up regularly and improving a little each class. Over time, the progress adds up—and the belts follow naturally.

At Morselli Jiu Jitsu, we believe in steady development and building strong foundations that last, whether your goal is competition, self-defense, or personal growth.
